Knee Therapy (Pain)In Louisville, Evansville & Southern Indiana

At ProRehab, we treat patients with all types of knee injuries, conditions, and pain. Our patients most commonly see us for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries and total knee replacements.

Research shows that 11% of all sprains or strains evaluated by physicians occur at the knee, and greater than half of all joint replacements are total knee arthroplasties. Clearly, the knee is an important joint that bears a lot of stress and forces over the years. Knee pain can cause walking to be uncomfortable or even unbearable, and untreated knee problems can create secondary injuries at other joints including the low back, hips, and ankles. Athletes often struggle with ACL or meniscus tears, as well as patellar tendonitis. Physical therapists can provide a non-invasive treatment of knee pain, as well as help patients prepare and recover from a surgical procedure on their knee.

Anterior Cruciate Ligament

ACL injuries can result from a blow to the knee or a simple twist of the knee. Physical Therapy can help in a conservative approach to an ACL injury by restoring strength, balance, and flexibility to the knee. ACL injuries often require surgical intervention. At ProRehab we work closely with your physician and rely on our sports medicine expertise to help facilitate the best route to recovery for you.

We can also assist you in prevention of injuries, ACL injuries being one of the most common preventable injuries from non-contact blows.

Conservative care approaches offered by ProRehab expert staff using integrative evidenced based techniques allows our patients the opportunity to decrease pain and increase function without needing surgical intervention. ProRehab uses techniques which address range of motion not only at the knee but at the hip, ankle, and spine, incorporating techniques from the Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA).

Common Causes of Knee Pain

Knee pain can come on suddenly, as in the case of an ACL tear, or it can come on gradually like it would in the case of knee osteoarthritis. Most ligament tears are the result of a traumatic event that occurs when playing sports, while degeneration of the cartilage that supports the knee can occur over time and pain will increase gradually. If you have had surgery on your knee, then the pain is likely a sign that your body is healing the way it should and a physical therapist’s treatment for knee pain can help you on your recovery journey.

Symptoms Related to Knee Joint Issues

Symptoms related to knee pain vary depending on the specific injury. Popping, locking, clicking, and giving way can indicate certain degenerative or meniscus injuries. Pain when descending stairs, and with standing and walking are also common knee-related symptoms. Swelling may or may not happen simultaneously with increased pain. After surgery pain is expected, but enrolling quickly in a physical therapy program can decrease your pain as well as reduce your risk of re-injury.

Finding the Right Solutions for Healthy Knees

Whether you are recovering from surgery or looking for a different approach to your knee pain treatment, our team at ProRehab can help. Recovery from ACL repair surgery and total knee replacement can be difficult and painful, and it is important to have a supportive team by your side throughout the process. Our treatment for knee pain involves gentle stretching and strengthening, as well as technology to increase muscle contraction and decrease pain. Our physical therapists work closely with your physician to ensure a smooth rehab process for you, allowing you to achieve your goals as quickly as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • A physical therapy visit lasts about 40-60 minutes. The actual contents of the visit vary based on your diagnosis/need, but typically what happens is:

    1. You check in with the receptionist, make any appointments necessary, and we discuss your health insurance benefits with you.
    2. You go into the gym. You can change clothes if you need to, then begin therapy.
    3. You perform 6-8 various exercises and stretches. These can include therapeutic band exercises, light body weight exercises, or minimal weights. The stretches will promote strength, stability, improved range of motion, and pain relief.
    4. We can initiate other techniques to include manual work, taping, cupping, and dry needling as needed.
    5. The therapist makes recommendations based on your progress. These can include altering the frequency of visits, making additions/alterations to your home exercise plan, or things to do before your next visit.
  • We recommend budgeting 40-60 minutes for a typical therapy session. The only exception to this will be your first visit, which can take about 20 minutes longer due to the physical therapy evaluation your therapist will provide. We also recommend showing up about 10-15 minutes early to your first visit. This way, you can complete the paperwork before your visit time and streamline the process.

  • If we are asking you to do something that is hurting too much, let us know! Physical therapy should not be severely painful. It is not common to be so sore that patients are in pain or it affects their daily life. If this ever happens during or after an appointment, let us know and we will adapt your program.

  • During your initial evaluation, your therapist may ask you a number of questions to determine what the cause of your pain is. This can include questions about your sleep habits, activity level, and work environment. They will also ask for a medical history, and then typically ask direct questions about where and when you experience pain.
