Dr. Kristen Schellhaas Discusses Intimacy after a Hip Replacement with GoodRX

Dr. Kristen Schellhaas, PT, DPT, RYT, a physical therapist at our Springhurst and Clarksville Clinics, provided practical guidance for safely resuming intimacy after a hip replacement.

In her comments to GoodRX, she emphasized using pillows for support, especially in side-lying positions, to keep the surgical hip stable and prevent crossing the midline of the body—a critical precaution to avoid dislocation. Dr. Schellhaas also recommended the “lying at the edge of the bed” position for stability and “standing with support” for flexibility and strength, as both options minimize stress on the hip.

She stressed the importance of communication with partners to prevent injury and encouraged using tools like foam wedges to ensure comfort and safety during recovery. These practices are not only effective but also safe, providing you with the confidence to resume intimacy without worry.
