Pediatric Physical TherapyIn Louisville, Evansville & Southern Indiana

ProRehab's physical therapists work with elementary to high school age children and their families during times of adversity.

Pediatricians are at the forefront to identify kids at a young age and intervene early, so that injuries in their youth do not cause issues later in life. We treat musculoskeletal and sports injuries, but adolescent growing pains can also be relieved and controlled with physical therapy. ProRehab will get your children back to a healthy and active lifestyle.

Physical Therapy for Kids

From growth spurts to rigorous sports schedules, kids from elementary school to high school put their bodies through a lot! At ProRehab we want to make sure your child stays as active as possible while still maintaining a healthy pattern of growth, so we offer physical therapy for kids! Injuries that occur in childhood can have devastating and long lasting effects if not handled appropriately, so it is important to receive the appropriate medical and physical therapy interventions in a timely manner. Playing competitive sports puts children at an additional risk for developing musculoskeletal conditions, but this risk can be decreased by sport specific pediatric physical therapy and training.

What is Pediatric Physical Therapy?

Pediatric physical therapy looks a little different than physical therapy for adults, but has the same general focus and outcome. Physical therapy for kids focuses on ensuring normal developmental patterns while also easing pain. Our pediatric physical therapists at ProRehab have a detailed understanding of how bones, muscles, and ligaments develop over the lifespan and use this knowledge to create a plan of care that works for your child’s specific needs. Whether it is a sports injury, a developmental condition such as growing pains, incontinence, bowel dysfunction, or something that happened in a car accident or other traumatic event, our therapists are here to help get your child back to their normal activities and on track for a happy, healthy life.

What Conditions Can Be Treated With Pediatric Physical Therapy?

There is a wide variety of pediatric conditions that are effectively treated by physical therapy. Sprains or strains, fractures (after immobilization), dislocations, tendonitis, shin splints, and back pain can all be managed by pediatric physical therapy. ProRehab also has specialists that are able to treat some conditions that are specific to kids and athletes, such as Osgood Schlatter, sinus tarsi syndrome, and Sever’s disease. We also offer a Youth Sports Enhancement Program that could be the right choice for any adolescent looking to reduce their risk for injury or get the competitive edge in their sport.

The pediatric physical therapy treatment we provide at ProRehab is specific to the child’s injury and their sports or hobbies. If your kid is a dancer and has snapping hip syndrome, we will work with them to reduce their symptoms with dance-related movements, stretches, and strengthening. Similarly, for kids with shoulder impingement who want to return to pitching for baseball or softball we will address the physical impairment while also providing sports specific training to optimize their throwing form from a biomechanical perspective. This type of treatment reduces pain and allows healing of the damaged tissues but also helps prevent future injuries.

We specialize in treating the following sports injuries in children:

Early physical therapy can accelerate recovery back to sports and prevent chronic or recurrence of injuries. Our children may not have physical education in school, and with current technology, the lack of activity has led to an increase in childhood obesity. This program will provide a safe and fun environment that can develop habits of an active lifestyle for their future.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • A physical therapy visit lasts about 40-60 minutes. The actual contents of the visit vary based on your diagnosis/need, but typically what happens is:

    1. You check in with the receptionist, make any appointments necessary, and we discuss your health insurance benefits with you.
    2. You go into the gym. You can change clothes if you need to, then begin therapy.
    3. You perform 6-8 various exercises and stretches. These can include therapeutic band exercises, light body weight exercises, or minimal weights. The stretches will promote strength, stability, improved range of motion, and pain relief.
    4. We can initiate other techniques to include manual work, taping, cupping, and dry needling as needed.
    5. The therapist makes recommendations based on your progress. These can include altering the frequency of visits, making additions/alterations to your home exercise plan, or things to do before your next visit.
  • We recommend budgeting 40-60 minutes for a typical therapy session. The only exception to this will be your first visit, which can take about 20 minutes longer due to the physical therapy evaluation your therapist will provide. We also recommend showing up about 10-15 minutes early to your first visit. This way, you can complete the paperwork before your visit time and streamline the process.

  • If we are asking you to do something that is hurting too much, let us know! Physical therapy should not be severely painful. It is not common to be so sore that patients are in pain or it affects their daily life. If this ever happens during or after an appointment, let us know and we will adapt your program.

  • During your initial evaluation, your therapist may ask you a number of questions to determine what the cause of your pain is. This can include questions about your sleep habits, activity level, and work environment. They will also ask for a medical history, and then typically ask direct questions about where and when you experience pain.

While experiencing some pretty intense back pain I tried a number of exercises and rehab techniques, but couldn’t seem to get the irritating aching to go away. Well, I chose ProRehab and fortunately this was the only stop I had to make to begin my journey getting back to life faster. They talk you through why and how the exercises they have you do are beneficial. I appreciate the ProRehab family for all they have and continue to do!
