Motor Vehicle Accident TherapyIn Louisville, Evansville & Southern Indiana
Over 10,600 people per year are injured from automobile accidents in Louisville and Lexington; and over 1,700 people are injured in car accidents in Evansville each year.
Motor vehicle accidents are also known as MVAs and car accidents. This considers either two cars or a car versus a bicyclist or pedestrian. Each year, around two million people are injured by car accidents in the United States and need treatment to recover back to normal.
Common Injuries After A Car Accident
The extent of MVA injuries depends on the nature of the car accident. In cases of low-velocity or mild car accidents such as a rear-end accident at twenty miles per hour, injuries will likely be minor. This includes typical injuries like muscle strains, concussions, and whiplash. Whiplash creates neck pain after a sudden impact, which can result in constant headaches and dizziness.
In cases of high-velocity collisions, such as a head-on collision at fifty miles per hour, more serious injuries can happen. This involves trauma injuries such as fractures, shoulder or hip dislocations, knee ligament injuries, and even chest and organ damage.
Treatment For MVA-Related Injuries
Depending on the severity of the accident and injuries, it is possible that someone may need surgery and a long rehabilitative process to recover. After trauma surgery, MVA physical therapy will focus on improving the range of motion of surrounding joints, and gradually strengthening the area so it can return to normal function.
Physical therapy after minor crashes will involve gradual neck movements, gentle stretching, mobility of the neck, and strengthening exercises to reduce whiplash symptoms like pain, dizziness, and neck stiffness. For muscle strains and pain, your physical therapist will use manual therapy to improve muscle and joint mobility, to gradually stretch, and strengthen affected muscles.
Benefits Of Physical Therapy After An Accident
Car accident physical therapy aims to facilitate muscle and joint recovery and reduce symptoms to levels before the accident. Your physical therapist will work to decrease your pain by giving you strategies in the clinic and to work on at home for pain control. Your PT will show you exercises to improve your strength and mobility and show you movements to avoid as you recover. All of these strategies will give you pain control and allow you to take an active role in your recovery. The goal is to return to your normal life as soon as possible after your accident.
