Staci Hildebrandt Discusses the Best Mattresses for Sciatica Pain with Forbes

“Sciatica is a relatively common condition that causes pain, weakness, numbness or tingling that is often caused by compression of the sciatic nerve, which is a nerve that comes from the lower back and runs down the leg.” Dr. Staci Hildebrandt, PT, DPT, a physical therapist at our Henderson Clinic, says, “It is possible a poor mattress may exacerbate or contribute to the symptoms of sciatica, but it is very unlikely to be the cause of it.” Dr. Hildebrandt spoke with Forbes for a recent article on the best mattresses for sciatica.

Studies have shown that medium-firm mattresses are the best for sciatica. “Your mattress and pillows should support your back properly. It’s important to make sure they don’t sag,” explained Dr. Hildebrandt. “The best mattress depends on each person’s weight, body shape, sleeping position, and personal preference, research shows that medium-firm mattresses provide the best relief for back pain.”

Moreover, your sleep position can significantly impact your sciatica pain. Dr. Hildebrandt advises, “Each sleeping position may require a little different support to facilitate more neutral spine alignment and comfort to help promote good sleep health.” She underscores the power of this knowledge, stating, “Research shows that sleep and pain have an inverse relationship. The more pain we are in, the less sleep we get, but also the less sleep we get, the more pain we have.” She recommends avoiding stomach sleeping, as it can exacerbate the pain and suggests sleeping on your side with a pillow between your knees or on your back with pillows under the knees for optimal spinal alignment.
